We are very excited to announce that Airmail Greetings has recently received his next aerial mission - the development of a special commemorative illustration for a special B-17 crew.
Video master, Andy Andersson and Joe Jones team forces to develop a tangible and lasting visual tribute to Andy's father in law 51 mission B-17 Commander, Robert Orton, and his gallant crew of the 483rd Bombardment Group.
Sadly, Robert recently passed away at the young age of 93. America, and Airmail Greetings morns the loss of one of our own. Both Andy and Joe stand as Robert's legacy to continue to respectfully honor and share the pivotal stories of these decorated airmen.
THE STORY ~ Robert completed 51 combat missions (256 combat hours) in September, 1944 as a B-17 Aircraft Commander with the 15th Air Force, 483rd Bombardment Group, 840th Bomb Squadron, European Theater of Operations based at Sterparone Airfield, Foggia, Italy. Little did Robert's crew realize at the time, as great fortune would have it, one of the reasons that so many bombing crews actually survived was the fact that the famed Tuskegee Airmen of the 99th Fighter Group flew air support for the 15th Air Force and the boys of the 483rd Bombardment Group in Italy.
Be sure to follow this profound story and the (step by step) process of the development of this important commemorative illustration.
Today, Joe shares this test render of both a B-17 of the 483rd BG, and two of the famed "Red Tail" P-51 Mustangs that flew cover for Robert's B-17 crew.
Airmail Greetings humbly continues to fly cover for them all.
